According to tradition, Carnival is the festive season that occurs immediately before Lent. And in Ibiza, this festival also has a very important place on the calendar! Mardi Gras – or Fat Tuesday – starts off with the “mariol•los”, a competition in which both the young and the old alike let their imagination go wild and dress in old, mixed or bizarre costumes with the hope of winning one of the six categories: floats, adult group, school group, residents’ association, best adult costume and best children’s costume. Traditionally, participants dress in any old clothes they can find, disguise themselves beyond recognition and then take to the streets with live marching bands. In the evening, the Spanish Omelette Party takes places, featuring a giant tortilla, which you can enjoy while listening to a live Orchestra.

On Carnival Saturday, the various groups surprise everyone with new, ingenious costumes, and add a rainbow of colour to the event. Once the parade is over, the festivities continue in Passeig de Vara de Rey with more music and plenty of dancing. On the following Sunday and Tuesday the focus is on the youngest members of the family, who can enjoy a show put on by a children’s entertainment group and a puppet show, among other activities. To round off the Carnival, the traditional “Sardine Burial” takes place, at which one can treat one’s palate to local sardines and wine before bidding a farewell to one of the most enjoyable parties of the year.

Apart from the activities mentioned above, every year the festival programme features new and varied events with the aim of satisfying the broadest possible audience. This includes plenty of parties in Ibiza’s best clubs – such as Manumission, Privilege, Space and Pacha – for those of you wanting to dance the night away!
